FAQs:
What is travel medicine?
Very simply, travel medicine is the branch of medicine that deal with the prevention and management of health problems of international travelers. This field encompasses a variety of disciplines including infectious disease, immunology, tropical medicine, military and migration medicine, and high altitude physiology. It is typically divided into four main topic areas:
- Prevention (vaccination and travel advice)
- Assistance (repatriation and medical treatment of travelers)
- Wilderness medicine (cruise ship medicine, high-altitude medicine, expedition/excursion medicine)
- Access to health care via travel insurance
Passport Health focuses on the prevention area of travel medicine by providing pre-travel consultations, vaccinations, and medications.
How is a travel medicine appointment different from a visit to a Primary Care Physician?
Unlike a Primary Care Physician, Passport Health is a one-stop destination for the international traveler. Our Travel Medicine Specialists, all of who m have received 40-80 hours of in-house training before seeing their first patient, administer and recommend vaccines, medications, and specialty travel health supplies tailored to the traveler’s destination. All medical services are provided in the context of a destination-specific health consultation that reviews safety tips, security information, how to mitigate the risk of insect-borne disease, food and water precautions, and even medical evacuation insurance. All of this information is summarized in a personalized, bound briefing booklet that the traveler can take overseas. In fact, most family doctors choose to send their patients to Passport Health for travel medicine services.
