In October of 2010 an outbreak of cholera began in Haiti. This disaster came soon after a devastating earthquake hit the country in January.

The earthquake caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and did irreparable damage to much of the country. The world responded with volunteers to help with the rebuild, including U.N. peacekeepers.

Six years after its start, we know the earthquake is likely where the epidemic began.

The U.N. admitted that some peacekeepers from Nepal carried the infection. Getting into the water supply, cholera then spread throughout Haiti.

Passport Health is partnering with Uber to deliver flu shots to 17 cities throughout the U.S. on Tuesday, Oct. 25th.

“Flu vaccines keep our communities healthy, and the more flu shots we can deliver -the healthier we all are,” said Paul Fishburn, Chief Operating Officer for Passport Health. “This partnership with Uber allows us to vaccinate people in an innovative way, which makes it intriguing for the patient and a lot of fun for our nurses.”

Influenza affects up to 20 percent of the population every year, yet less than half of adults get the flu shot. Some people are not healthy enough to get the flu vaccine, which is why Uber and Passport Heath want to make it easy for those who can get a flu shot to get one.

Uber and Passport Health first partnered in 2014, with a flu program that debuted in three cities. In 2015, the program expanded to even more cities. This 2016 program aims to help local communities avoid influenza throughout the flu season.

Passport Health has previously partnered with government and health organizations to provide travel and other key immunizations. These partnerships include helping the U.S. government provide anthrax vaccinations after the 2001 anthrax attacks.

The company’s mobile flu participation began in 2014 with its initial partnership with Uber.

Russia’s been center stage in the news for political and social issues, and now it seems Russia has the potential to cause widespread smallpox and anthrax outbreaks.

This summer, a town in eastern Russia saw an outbreak of anthrax, which, according to TIME, was the first outbreak Russia’s seen in 75 years.

Experts suspect that climate change is contributing to the possibility of these outbreaks.

As temperatures increase in Russia, specifically in the Siberian regions, the ground thaws. This creates a problem because Russians buried their dead under the frozen ground. As the ground thaws, the bodies become exposed and carry potential diseases.

If smallpox and anthrax were to resurface in Russia, it wouldn’t take much for the diseases to spread. Though Russia is across the ocean and then some, those diseases are highly contagious and spread quickly. Water and land aren’t barriers to anthrax and smallpox like they may have been in the past.
