Hawaii is a special breed of island tropic.

The eight different islands making up the state are filled with volcanoes, beaches and places to explore. Still, the Aloha State is far different than the Caribbean islands.

Hawaii boasts an area that’s full of volcanoes and is perfect for surfing. The Caribbean draws people in with a lively atmosphere and the music to match.

A part of the United States, Hawaii shares a lot of the same customs and American values. But, there’s no denying that the islands have their own loose feel that’s impossible to find on the mainland.

Mosquito-borne diseases have a way of creating mass panic throughout the world. An outbreak of Zika, West Nile or malaria will get headlines as people do anything to avoid the insects.

Those epidemics make it so much more satisfying when we find a vaccine against of these diseases.

Yellow fever had that breakthrough in 1937.

The race for a vaccine started 50 years earlier, when Walter Reed confirmed that yellow fever is a mosquito-borne virus. In 1901, the U.S. Army physician proved that the insects, and not a bacteria, were responsible for yellow fever.

Unlicensed and unapproved drugs, these phrases might create a terrifying image.

You may imagine some seedy, under the table alternative to a vaccine. Possibly an outdated and dangerous medicine that has no place in modern society.

The world’s first vaccine may even come to mind. Pus from a cowpox boil was used to prevent smallpox in a practice that would cause nightmares today.

Actually, while the phrases are accurate, unlicensed and unapproved drugs don’t have to mean the medicine or vaccine is dangerous.
